The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration released figures for 2005 revealing that there had been 16,885 fatalities in alcohol-related traffic accidents. This accounts for 39% of all traffic deaths in 2005 (in the US). While drivers with blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) that are over the legal limit are found in the majority of the fatalities due to alcohol-related crashes (14,539 in 2005), even people with BACs below the legal limit are responsible for over 2000 deaths each year.
